Summary: I've been working on a story for LJ Idol Exhibit A, and this is the POV of the guard from the first entry I did.  Other entries are here, here and here if anyone is interested in reading more about Insignificants.

It’s not as if I enjoy my job, day in, day out, patrolling the clinics and dispensaries, making sure unauthorized civvies don’t get a Masque.  I mean, it’s the same thing over and over again.  Those little urchin bastards sneaking in, thinking they’re unnoticed, stealing what belongs to those of us who deserve it.  Then there are the wretches, who don’t have enough money to pay for it and beg until they’re a nuisance.  They deserve to die when Guardian is released.  They don’t contribute to society in any noticeable way.  They’re a drain on resources.  They don’t work, they use the system.  I take a certain amount of pleasure in busting them up a bit and turning them back out on the street.

I’ve busted my fair share of heads, but I’ve never had to actually execute one.  Law says I can too, if I need to.  Just haven’t got to that point I guess.  More fun to watch them struggle day after day, panicking as the release time gets closer because they have nothing to save them.  Like animals trapped in a cage, they are.

Take that urchin girl this afternoon, all panicky and trying to hide in the dispensary, grabbing that little kid to get him out of the way.  Thought I didn't see her duck behind that counter, but I did.  Snuck up on her all suspenseful too, to make her thing she might be safe.  I was going to nab her, add them to the rest and let them get their just punishment for stealing what belonged to us.  Then I saw the boy.  I saw his Masque.  It was shrinking something awful as it dried.  Stupid child didn't steal enough to cover his face right.  Looked right into the girl's green eyes too, all full of pride and defiance, but she knew it too.  It's okay though, they'll get theirs tonight when Guardian is released.  A Masque that doesn't fit like that boys?  They'll be dead by morning and I won't have to worry about them anymore.
