LJ Idol Exhibit A - Week 8

Revolution

The crowded square allowed Gabby, Yussef and Rico to blend in easily.  The Regional Senator was scheduled to make an address at the top of the hour, and the government administration building had been decorated for the occasion.  Centered in front was a large dais surrounded by huge marble columns.  A podium, deemed official with the seal of the North American Federation, had been set up and was ready to inform.  Two semi-circles of chairs were arranged behind it for the city’s dignitaries and other important people who would be in attendance.

The crowd hushed as the chairs started to fill and security guards, dressed in full riot gear, placed themselves on either side of the dais.  Gabby’s group of undesirables, still unidentified, had already made several forays Topside and officials were taking no chances.  It wasn’t long before the Regional Senator took the stage.

“Citizens, I come before you today to venerate this great nation which I represent.  We have conquered!  We have overcome!

“It has been five years since Passover Modern.  The air is clean, the fields are clean, the water is clean.  No more viruses plague the people.  Guardian was a success.  It eradicated a pestilence long suffered from our beautiful cities and countryside.  Quality of life has improved.  Quality of goods and services has improved.  Areas of manufacturing, long tired, have been rejuvenated and made more efficient.  Schools are teaching advanced curriculum.  Advances have been increasing rapidly in all areas of science and technology.  All of this thanks to the systems for the careful selection of those deserving The Masque that would save them to fight on for our wonderful nation.  You!  You were the chosen people.”

The shouts from the crowd were deafening.  The Regional Senator held up his hands with a smile.

“Please,” he admonished, “Let me continue.”

Gabby thought she was going to be sick.  How could the people not see through his polish, his spin, and get at the truth.  Their government had murdered thousands of people, and they were now willing to let thousands more die.  Her eyes focused back on the podium as the Regional Senator started speaking again.

“Sadly, we have come up against something that threatens to diminish our success of the last five years.  There are those who defied the laws.  There are those who obtained The Masque illegally, either stealing it, or having unauthorized dealers sell them counterfeits.  There were no guarantees for these thieves, these criminals.  Most did not survive, but there are a number who did.  You’ve seen them.  They are deformed, they are dirty, they are destitute.  They wander the streets, unable to fend for themselves.  They expect handouts from us.  They want us, those who abide by the law, who were chosen because of our competence, accomplishments, and good deeds, to give them all we have worked so hard to achieve.

“I say, ‘NO!’  We will not just give away our well deserved, hard earned money, food, medicine and other resources.  These people, these thieves and criminals, they do not deserve what we have.  They were not chosen.  They were not supposed to survive Guardian.  If they had done what they were supposed to, their lives wouldn’t be like this.  They would have gone peacefully to a better place; to a place where they would have seen paradise and had all they could hope for.  They chose to defy the law, to throw our newfound peace and success into turmoil and suffering.

“A Federation Edict was issued recently denying these people services.  The Edict also makes it a crime for any person or organization to offer aid to any person that has been deemed unlawfully viable.  I implore you, good citizens of the North American Federation, to follow this Edict.  Our great nation, nay, the entire world, cannot afford to drain our resources in support of criminals of this nature.

“Already, there have been reports of attacks on government institutions, right here in this good city.  Citizens, you are encouraged to discourage and report these attacks.  Do not offer support to the perpetrators of this menace against our carefully preserved society.  Remember, we are part of a new Earth.  Newly cleansed of pestilence and needless suffering, renewed and growing stronger day by day, month by month, year by year.  We are survivors!  We have conquered!  We have overcome!”

As the Regional Senator finished his speech, the crowd roared with approval.  There were few pockets of indignation and surprise, quickly quelled before dissention could spread amongst the ranks.

He lifted his hand in a gesture toward the Administration Building and a flag started to unfurl.  The crowd quickly silenced.  Instead of the expected Federation flag, a blood red cloth with a white stripe crossing diagonally from one corner to the other and a large black “I” in the center flapped in the wind.  A low recorded chant started, “We are not insignificant!  We are not insignificant!”  Slowly the crescendo built until the chant filled the square over the loud speakers.

Gabby, Yussef, and Rico quietly slipped away, unnoticed, smiling to themselves.  It was their most effective foray Topside yet.

A crude rendering of what the flag looked like:

Insignificants Flag

(This is my entry for therealljidol Week 8.  I've survived the Second Chance pool and have been put back into the main competition.  We were able to choose our own topics this week and mine was, "The New Rhetoric."  Again, it is a continuation of Insignificants but is meant to stand alone.  If you would like to read previous installments, I'll be adding I've added links to my journal page.  Voting should be up tonight/tomorrow, and while I've avoided begging for votes, it would be awesome if you all would hop on over and read the awesome entries and vote for those you like.  I'll edit the link as soon as it's up.  ETA: Link to voting post.

Thanks go out to
beldarzfixon, audreybuttercup, lrig_rorrim, lilycobalt, and unmowngrass for beta reading and their valuable input!)

It really is amazing how easily genocide can be spun as something that was good for the people. Holy shit. I definitely enjoyed this section. :)

It is amazing how well it can be spun and has been spun in our own history. Scary actually.

Thank you. Glad you enjoyed it. :)

Thank you! The flag had to be something simple, just because of where they are from and how scarce supplies are. I figured it would be something they could have made easily.

I cannot imagine what it must be like to hear rhetoric like that in person, Insignificant or not. You've definitely nailed it on that!

Me either. I can't imagine hearing it and not being on the side of "WTF?!"

Thank you for reading!

That rhetoric is just...wow, how horrible! Your story was really well-done, and scary. It is quite frightening how something so evil can be shined up into something "good" with some fancy words. I loved the flag, too.

Good job!

Thank you. It is scary how evil can be twisted and presented as good.

I had fun trying to design the flag. My graphics skills are not very good.

Somehow, this story has to go on and have Good triumph over Evil.
I can't imagine how it feels for the Insignificants to be up against such great odds but they are fighters!

I'm hoping that it will eventually end that way. Is it weird that I don't really know the details yet?

The Insignificants are fighters though, so I'm rooting for their success.

This was an excellent continuation of the series — it really invokes the dystopian atmosphere, and stands alone well while still being a great followup to the other pieces in the world.

Thank you. I've tried to create a stand alone with each installment without being too repetitive, so it's nice to hear that it works.

They want us, those who abide by the law, who were chosen
It's a lot EASIER to abide by the law when you've been chosen to survive rather than to be murdered!

Remember, we are part of a new Earth. Newly cleansed of pestilence
I.e., people

and needless suffering
Apart from killing people to "prevent" their suffering existence of poverty and being deemed less than meritable.

What's most frightening about this is that similar campaigns have been held before, and people have bought into the rhetoric. It's amazing how different "cleansing" sounds from "murder."

This is just fiction, but it's scary that it HAS happened in reality and that it happens still.

I felt a little sick reading this. Not that it wasn't nicely written, or anything.

But, how he was describing the people -- as thieves and dirty and more or less subhuman -- is more or less how people describe Romani people. Throughout history, people have always had good excuses to simply get rid of us or, you know, get rid of us.

I'm kind of glad you felt a little sick reading it. There are so many people who have been viewed this way and been decimated.

This reminds me of a lecture in high school, where my history teacher was demonstrating some of the ways that political leaders had made genocide sound reasonable.... Scary stuff.

That's the scariest part for me, I think. This is prevalent in our history and even today. It's amazing how the right words strung together can make murder sound like a good, moral thing.

~slow clap~ Excellent! You nailed the rhetoric, the political double talk, the tension in the crowd, all of it! Well done!

Thanks. My graphics skills are pretty basic, but I figure that with the materials the Insignificants would have, their flag would be pretty rudimentary.
